Production is becoming concentrated in increasingly efficient and profitable units. At the same time, the industry is investing in R&D and innovations in order to regain its competitive advantage. The marketplace today is a highly competitive one, and the industry has to look for new ways of operating ? simply in order to survive. New emerging technologies may bring some relief in a dire situation, and the creation of local and global production networks is a step forward as well. The Finnish forest cluster has set an ambitious target of doubling the value of its products and services by 2030. This target may seem especially bold, while considering that half of this value will come from products not yet under manufacture. However, this is exactly the right attitude: only innovation will secure success on the global stage. In Finland, there are also concerns voiced over the workforce of the future. As the industry offers both white-collar and blue-collar positions, there is a simultaneous need for vocational and academic education. Vocational training, for instance, should prepare the would-be-employees to handle a wide range of different tasks. Anne Brunila, President and CEO of Finnish Forest Industries Federation, calls for a cooperative effort from all stakeholders. She argues that further collaboration is needed in order to develop new operating models to enhance the competitiveness of the industry. – It would be a mistake to remain passively watching the developments from the sidelines, since this would pose a threat to jobs to an increasing extent, she points out. The message is simple: it’s time to get back in the game. Sami J. Anteroinen

Bavarian Behemoth MYLLYKOSKI IS BUILDING A WORLD-CLASS PAPER MILL IN WORLD-RECORD TIME M yllykoski is building an ultra-modern paper mill in Bavaria, Germany. The new rising star for the Group, Plattling Papier, will feature a new multi-grade paper machine with the most environmentally advanced process technology and modern operations. Plattling Papier is eager to set new standards in production and service of uncoated publication paper. Project Director Caius Murtola confirms that Plattling Papier will be one of the most modern paper mills worldwide. The more than 10-metre-wide multi-grade paper machine will produce uncoated publication papers used for magazines, mail order catalogues and advertising sup4 papertec 2008 TEXT: SAMI J. ANTEROINEN PHOTOS: MYLLYKOSKI CONTINENTAL GMBH plements. The paper machine is built and erected by Metso Paper utilising the most advanced technology available. “The biggest challenge so far is simply that we are building the mill in world-record time,” Murtola says. For next year, he feels that the challenge is to get a stable run of the machine. “WE WANT TO SET A NEW STANDARD IN SC-A.” While PM 1 at Plattling Papier is often described as a supercalendered (SC) paper unit, the more accurate term would probably be multi-grade machine; after all, PM 1 has been designed to produce – in addition to standard SC paper – mainly SC-A and improved newsprint for gravure. Caius Murtola points out that these two grades have been missing from the Group’s portfolio, and it is high time to rectify the situation. “We complete the Group’s portfolio with SC-A paper. This gives us the chance to provide our customers different products out of one location. This, in turn, makes many things easier in the handling – for us and the customers,” Murtola sums up. NUMBER ONE IN EUROPE Due to the new paper machine, Plattling will be the company’s most important location in Europe. Murtola states that the

Page 5

significance of Plattling rises to a different level entirely with the advent of the new mill; actually, it will be one of the biggest in Germany. Plattling Papier is rising next to the Myllykoski’s MD Plattling mill which produces wood-containing coated publishing paper. After the start-up of the new paper mill in early 2008, the Plattling location will have an annual capacity of almost 800,000 tons. Customers worldwide will be served with both uncoated and coated publication papers for their high quality reader requirements. Additional synergies of MD Plattling and Plattling Papier can also be achieved, particularly in the areas of logistics, sourcing and additional partnering concepts. The original idea was to build a mill in the Czech Republic, but Murtola is very satisfied that Myllykoski decided to change the venue: “The Plattling location is a very smart one: here we are at the gate to CEE countries, which makes Plattling a very rewarding location,” he says, adding that Plattling can profit from many synergies between the existing and the new mill. “We will find synergies for instance in sourcing, water, HR, wood…, “ Murtola lists. DYNAMIC DUO Murtola also believes that the support from the existing mill is very relevant: many little issues can be solved very quickly and easily, because the infrastructure and know-how of the existing mill can be used to iron out the wrinkles. The project has advanced with remarkable speed: work on site started barely a year ago – in November 2006 – with construction companies moving 120,000 m 3 of soil in the process. As the foundations were laid, a total of 19 cranes were installed on the building site. 75,000 m 3 of site-poured concrete, 7,000 prefabricated parts and 5,500 tonnes of steel were required to complete the building. To put it all in proper perspective: the material volume is sufficient to build houses for 1,300 families. Furthermore, the largest panorama window will be 530 square metres. The largest girder, a traverse part of the truss, is papertec 2008 5

Page 6

36 metres long and – at the highest point – 2.5 m high, weighing about 70 tons . In addition, a debarking plant is being set up next to the pressure groundwood plant, in which tree trunks as wide as 1.50 m are to be processed. The papers produced here will be calendered on an OptiLoad TwinLine calender whose frames were delivered in four parts that weighted a staggering 90 tonnes – each. CALENDER ODYSSEY Delivering the massive parts proved to be quite a challenge. Originally, the parts were supposed to travel from Järvenpää, Finland to Plattling, Bavaria as special transport on carriage – first to Travemünde by ship and then across Germany to Plattling by truck. The trip was scheduled to take a week. However, the German officials did not want to crowd the already congested main roads with special deliveries of this magnitude and Metso was not cleared for transport. Smaller roads were not an option, because the machine parts were too wide. Another road route would have meant another – possibly futile – permit hunt. Metso figured that the best bet in a dire situation was to sail up the River Elbe from Travemünde, but the river route provided no solution to the problem: a critical canal was out-of-operation for a critical two weeks. Metso logistics people 6 papertec 2008 faced a gargantuan challenge: because of the tight installation schedule, the parts needed to get to Plattling without delay. With Elbe out of the picture, Metso looked at other waterway options. Luckily, the great rivers Rhine and Danube are connected to each other via a canal and Danube flows across the City of Deggendorf – only a few kilometres away from Plattling! So the parts left Järvenpää and sailed, instead of Travemünde, to Antwerp where a river boat and the necessary cranes were acquired. From Antwerp, the parts started their long journey up the Danube. In ten days, the boat made it to Deggendorf with the final destination practically around the corner. The parts were only slightly late, but as the construction on site had hit a small delay at the same time, no days were missed because of a late delivery. ALL SYSTEMS GO Right now, Caius Murtola reports that the construction of the mill is coming along very nicely, despite the demanding schedule. “Right before wintertime most of the construction work at the building is done. Now we focus on installing the machinery,” Murtola says. The big sections of the machines already installed, and over 90 per cent of the mechanical assembly has already been completed. Future activities over the next few weeks will include electrical assembling. According to Murtola, there are now about 1,200 people working on the construction site. He points out that in the spring most of the people were construction workers, but now the majority of the crew consists of machine fitters. “The fitters number around 1,000, with almost 500 coming from Metso and its suppliers,” Murtola explains. Myllykoski’s € 485 million investment in Plattling Papier means a genuine commitment to Plattling. Of course, the company has a long relationship with the community: 25 years ago MD Plattling’s PM 10 kicked off, producing its very first coated paper. POWER OF COMMUNITY Murtola describes the level of cooperation from Bavarian authorities and the surrounding community as very good indeed: “The local stakeholders have been very helpful and interested in finding quick and good solutions for both sides. For instance, the licensing process only took about three months,” he says. The authorities also helped the company to find appropriate landfill sites since dumping of excavation material is only allowed at special sites.

Page 7

Myllykoski is also a highly attractive employer, it seems. The mill, once up and running, will have 120 permanent jobs and the company received 1,500 applications for these positions. Murtola explains the high interest level by saying that it’s not only a job Myllykoski is offering – the company offers a chance to be part of the team which builds up one of the most modern paper machines worldwide. “It is very exciting to see everything grow and develop and to be part of it. People are proud to be members of this project. If you are member of the start-up team, a part of yourself becomes one with the project,” proud Project Director declares. BUILDING THE PERFECT TEAM Murtola is also very pleased that about one-third of the employees are former MD Dachau staff. At the same time, he describes the actual recruitment process as very complex. “After all, this is not only a new paper machine we are building, but an entire mill that requires various competencies. Out of more than 1,500 applications we have formed a really good team.” Environmental focus at Plattling M yllykoski wants to make sure that the new mill is as environmentally-friendly as possible. Upon completion, Plattling Papier will be partly integrated with the existing MD Plattling infrastructure. The 380,000-tonne-per-year machine features the best available technology with emphasis on minimising the environmental impact. According to the Myllykoski Sustainability Report 2006, the energy efficiency of MD Plattling improved last year. With roughly the same amount of natural gas burned, 20,000 tonnes more paper was produced in 2006 in comparison to the previous year. For Plattling Papier, Myllykoski estimates that 1.3 GWh of electricity will be consumed on an annual level. The new machine accounts for 650,000 to 700,000 GWh. At the moment, Myllykoski obtains power from the mains system and utilises gas to produce its steam. However, the entire energy concept is presently being reviewed and a new power plant might be in the works in order to improve the energy situation. This thinking is in line with the Sustainability Report, which states that Myllykoski strives to reduce the environmental impact of its energy generation by improving the energy efficiency of its operations and also by CHP generation. Improving the energy efficiency means – on the one hand – that the use of energy is optimised continuously and with investments in the facilities; and, on the other hand, that the machinery installed in the context of the investment projects contributes towards energy efficiency. Myllykoski has been trying to trim down on energy consumption for a while now: between 2002–2006, for instance, Myllykoski reduced the specific electricity consumption by 7 % and the specific heat consumption by 9 %. Myllykoski is also active in trying to forge a more sustainable future for the entire industry. As a key part of this effort, the company has been involved in creating ‘The CO2 footprint on the paper industry’ concept. ? papertec 2008 7

Page 8

The new staff started work in July and was assigned to groups in accordance with their future tasks. The individual groups will undergo various trainings for about half a year. MD Papier presently has 487 employees, and with the launch of the new mill the total number of staff in Plattling will reach 600. Plattling Papier needs fewer employees than MD Plattling, because the new mill organisation will be less hierarchical and more flexible. Murtola says that the new approach enables the mill to focus on its main business – papermaking. “Due to this, we have a close collaboration with some partners like Scandinavian Mill Service or PLI for maintenance or logistics,” Murtola says. Also clear synergies with MD Plattling mean that the number of employees can remain relatively low. FAST, FASTER, FASTEST While looking at the progress of the past months, one can not help but marvel at the speed of the construction. Largely thanks to a warm winter, the buildings for the new paper mill were raised in just a few months. Paramount among these was the construction of the 375m long machine building. Here, Myllykoski decided to deploy an unorthodox construction technique: instead of the traditional way of building from the centre to the right and left, the building was constructed from 8 papertec 2008 the eastern part to the western part, thus enabling faster completion of the various production sections of the new mill. Murtola remarks that the unconventional method of construction was very beneficial from the point of view of entire project. “Also the weather was on our side. As a result, we hardly had any downtimes and kept our schedule,” Murtola looks back at last winter’s efforts. PM 1 RULES THE ROOST PM 1, the heart of it all, is 170 metres long, with a maximum trim width at winder of 10.5 m – this gives the Bavarian powerhouse a 6 cm edge in comparison to the previous world-record holder, Stora Enso’s PM 12 at the Kvarnsveden mill, Sweden. “The superior width is significant since it gives us more clearance with the trim,” Murtola explains, adding that by selecting this particular width Myllykoski is also getting ready for the future, since there is no printing machine that can handle 5.2 m rolls. Furthermore, the Project Director is not aware of any comparable SC-A projects presently going on. He also sees that the timing for the mill is perfect from Myllykoski’s point of view since the market is tightening up. Murtola explains that the LWC market is very tight at the moment; some one million tonnes have been taken out from the market. The development in the SC market looks good. FACTS AND FIGURES • 1,200 people are working on Bavaria’s biggest construction site in November • 7,000 prefabricated parts like columns and wall elements • Cast-in-place concrete: 75,000 m³ • Construction Steel: 5,500tn • Ground Excavation: 240,000 m³, for PM-Building: 120,000 m³ • Biggest picture-window: 530m² • Biggest truss for the roofconstruction: 36m long, 2,5m high, weights 70t • 61 km pipes; 28 km for the PM and 33 km for the PGW-mill and the water “In this situation, we see grade switching and SC demand strengthening ” GROWING THROUGH CHANGES For Myllykoski Group, Plattling Papier means trying to achieve something new in a familiar setting. Change, of course, is nothing new to the company: Myllykoski is known as a pioneer in using new technologies as well as in the recycled fibre use for paper production. Consequently, all the Group’s European mills are certified with the environmental management System ISO 14000. Myllykoski’s vision is to be the premier publication paper brand recog

Metso Paper delivers state-of-the-art paper machine P M 1 at Plattling Papier is characterised by its highly developed technology and high automation level, which, in rough terms, equals that of a space shuttle. The end product will be top quality uncoated publication paper. The focus is on guaranteeing best printed results and maximising printing machine efficiency. This is achieved by combining the innovative selection of PGW as the main furnish component with the all on-line papermaking machine concept. The complete paper machine line is supplied by Metso. The new PM 1, based on Metso’s OptiConcept technology, will be an all online machine and with its 11.300mm wire width, the widest in the world in its class. Metso’s extensive delivery covers the complete paper making process from woodhandling and stock preparation to roll packaging, with all related automation. The machine includes latest innovations in printing paper production, such as the OptiLoad TwinLine calender, which ensures a high paper gloss while maintaining a good paper bulk. Furthermore, the finishing section is able to produce up to 5.2m wide “super jumbo” rolls for the most advanced printing presses. By November, about 90% of the mechanical parts of PM 1 were already installed, and the main focus was turning towards electronics and automation. With 500 professionals from Metso and its suppliers on site, the mill project is right on schedule to produce its first saleable paper in Q1/2008. Metso Paper, through its Scandinavian Mill Service (SMS) subsidiary, will also establish and operate maintenance services at the new Plattling Papier paper mill. The agreement – which uses the principles of Myllykoski’s alliance partner Rhein Papier’s operational model based on long-term partnership – covers both the establishment of a maintenance infrastructure, such as building up an organisation and computerised maintenance management system, and the maintenance operations themselves. The operations consist of roll maintenance and daily maintenance, the focus being on preventive and predictive activities. SMS will be responsible for mechanical, electrical, automation and civil maintenance for the entire mill. SMS uses the latest state-of-the-art maintenance concepts combined with Metso’s machinery, process and automation know-how, and the operator maintenance principle. Once fully operational, SMS will employ 40 people in Plattling. This also marks the first time ever that Metso Paper entered into an extensive service agreement for a production plant still under construction. The Scandinavian Mill Service Group operates and develops pulp and paper industry maintenance. The Group employs approximately 500 people in Finland, Sweden, Norway, the Czech Republic and Spain, and now also in Germany. The Group is owned by Metso Paper and Metso Automation. Metso is a global engineering and technology corporation with 2006 net sales of approximately EUR 5 billion. Its 25,500 employees in more than 50 countries serve customers in the pulp and paper industry, rock and minerals processing, the energy industry and selected other industries. ? nised for creativity and positive business solutions. Besides Germany and Finland, Myllykoski has manufacturing in Switzerland and the United States as well as sales offices around the world. The Finnish roots of the parent company go back as far as 1892. The Group’s products consist of wood-containing uncoated and coated publication papers, including newsprint. Customers include publishers, printers, and retailers worldwide. Myllykoski is among the largest publication paper producers in the world. Premekon Oy’s service platforms installed at Plattling paper mill The Finnish company Premekon Oy designs, manufactures, and assembles custom-made service platforms and walkways for a number of industrial applications. They include paper and cellulose machines, equipment and storage tanks. One of Premekon’s recent major projects was the Plattling Papier paper mill in Germany, close to the Bavarian Forest. F rom its foundation in 1984 through to 1991, Premekon worked as an engineering design company. It started the production of various metal structures in 1991. The company moved to its present location in Joutseno in south-eastern Finland in 1996. Within the past 12 months, Premekon has participated in major export projects in Japan, China, United States, Brazil, Germany, and Turkey. FINNISH PROJECTS IN BAVARIA ”Premekon Oy has a long history of cooperation with Metso Corporation. We have supplied service walkways to Metso’s various production units in Northern Europe,” recounts Mr. Martti Immonen, Managing Director of Premekon Oy. 10 papertec 2008 To enable the servicing of paper machines at Plattling Papier paper mill, Premekon Oy’s service platforms are needed. ”For the Plattling project, Premekon was in charge of supplying service platforms for the entire production line,” says Immonen. ”In part, walkways for the project were shipped to Metso’s production facilities in Finland for pre-assembly work. However, a number of walkways – those intended for the drier and optiload units – were transported directly to Germany.” INNOVATIVE ALUMINIUM PLATFORMS All in all, Premekon supplied some 800 square metres of service platforms for the Plattling project. In accordance with standard procedure, the company also drew up the design plans and installation instructions for the service platforms. The final assembly of the service walkways, both in Finland and in Germany, was carried out by Metso’s local installation personnel. The platforms that Premekon supplied for the Plattling project were mostly of traditional design – apart from the fact that Premekon’s new aluminiummade service platforms were included. Mr. Immonen notes that the project posed no particular problems from the platform manufacturer’s point of view. ”It was a normal kind of project. Of course, since it encompassed service platforms for an entire production line in a Central European production facility, the project was reasonably exceptional in its magnitude,” Immonen points out. ? Botnia’s Uruguay project finalised Metsä-Botnia’s product portfolio significantly expanded, when Fray Bentos mill in Uruguay added a new product, eucalyptus pulp to company’s range. Uruguayan authorities gave the authorisation for the plant in Fray Bentos in November, and the mill started in earnest 10th of November 2007, when the first chips were fed into the digestor. 12 papertec 2008 Photos: Botnia T he start-up of Fray Bentos pulp mill proceeded very well. After one week from start-up, the mill was producing approximately 2,000 tons per day, and the quality is good. The mill manager Sami Saarela states that the start-up has gone better than in any of the other mills where he has participated in the start-up process. “We started up one of the most modern pulp mills in the world and an example in environmental care.” The extensive commissioning and testing of equipment was mainly done by September 2007 and by October it was mainly only landscaping that was undone. The Fray Bentos mill applies the BAT, Best Available Techniques, and is thus efficient, environmentally-friendly and safe. The brand new pulp mill is biggest industrial investment ever in Uruguay. At the same time, Fray Bentos is the biggest single investment done by Finnish company abroad. Mill Manager Sami Saarela tells that both sides, Finns as well as Uruguayans, have been extremely motivated, which is one reason the project could be finished in time and within the given budget. “Finns have transferred their technological expertise to local staff. In most cases guiding of new job was done in work pairs, with one mentoring Finn and one local person. But after launching the mill now, Finnish experts are needed mainly only as kind of sparring pair and in some key posts. Main responsibility goes with local experts.” THOUSANDS OF WORKPLACES The pulp mill employs about 300 people inside the mill fence and gates. Of these, little more than 100 are on the payroll list of Andritz Service, for which Botnia outsourced maintenance of the mill. Most new workplaces come from forestry operations and subcontractors who create more than direct 2000 jobs. Kemira has some 35-40 people on their “chemical island”, which directly feeds all chemicals to pulp mill. Kemira producess chemicals also for exports in Fray Bentos. “All this means that about 2500 direct jobs were created,” says Saarela. “Indirect jobs are estimated at 3600.

Page 13

The latter includes transportation, construction, commerce, but also administrative and financial services.” Total yearly production of Fray Bentos pulp mill will be around one million tons. Of this approximately 70 % goes to customer-owners, and the rest 30 % is market pulp. Geographically 70 % will be delivered to Europe and 30 % mainly to China. The pulp produced in Fray Bentos suites especially for uncoated fine papers and tissue papers, where short-fibre euca is good raw material. Contrary to some misinformation, eucalyptus plantations are environmentally-friendly. Only 4 % of Uruguay’s total land area is dedicated to tree plantation. Botnia represent only part of this 4 per cent. Also, Forestal Oriental is already minimising impacts and protecting biodiversity by leaving adequate number of unplanted areas. These areas comprise protected areas for cattle grazing and beekeeping and conservation areas as such. EFFECTIVE WASTE WATER TREATMENT Botnia’s pulp mill is environmental-friendly, integrated whole: for example, the mill has one of the best equipped plants for recovery and treatment of effluents. “Botnia plant treats its own effluents. Botnia has informed its readiness to handle waste waters from the City of Fray Bentos, thus improving the quality of the river from its present environmental status,” says Sami Saarela. “It is up to Uruguay government and Fray Bentos city, how fast community sewage can be taken into recovery. We have the full readiness in our area, but some pipelines and pumps would be needed from their side.” The mill recycles and optimises the use of raw materials during the whole process. SELF-SUFFICIENT POWER-GENERATION Botnia’s Fray Bentos mill is a very large plant, consisting of many separate units. The main chimney stands at 120 meters and the recovery boiler is 70 meters high. “The 120 meter pipe is quite high in South America, but in Europe it is quite usual solution,” explains Sami Saarela. The Fray Bentos pulp mill is selfsufficient in energy, or actually there will be surplus energy to be used to generate electricity. The technique is biomass power generating that is done according to Kyoto protocol. In the process black liquor is used from the pulping process for steam and electricity generation in the recovery boiler. “The surplus electricity from the pulp mill goes to the Uruguay electricity grid and to the chemical mill in the neighborhood. The excess electricity production capacity is around 32 MW.” Saarela notes that the recovery boiler as well as the whole mill also uses the most modern techniques (BAT, best available techniques to minimise any impact on the environment. “Many international companies participated in the delivery of the recovery boiler and related equipment. Alstom supplied air pollution control equipment. The order comprised of three concrete-bottom electrostatic precipitators and flue gas ducting for the soda recovery boiler.” VARIED TRAINING PROGRAMS Training was an essential part of the pulp mill delivery. This realises especially now after the start-up, when maintenance and service activities are be needed. The Finnish AEL Centre for Technical Training had an important role in this, but it was naturally Botnia that took the overall responsibility. “The main role of AEL in the planning stage was to create an extensive training period which would ensure that the Botnia Uruguay supervisors would have sufficient know-how to guarantee an efficient startup and operations of the mill,” tells Kirsi Seppäläinen, Communication Manager of Botnia. Another challenge was adding the maintenance people of Andritz Uruguay to the same training group. This was, however, very important to create a good team of the mill operators and maintenance people and to get them know each other. In cooperation with the customers, AEL Centre for Technical Training prepared a diversified training package including theory lessons, project related lessons, mill visits and group assignments, as well as six week training period in the mill afterwards. Pohto, the Insitute for Managepapertec 2008 13

Page 14

ment and Technological Training, had an important role in educating maintenance personnel of Andritz Uruguay S.A. Pohto was the partner responsible for training the supervisors of the maintenance organisation. Training covered reliability management, maintenance procedures in pulp mill, shut-down planning and management, as well as work safety. “In the training process Botnia has also had its own experts from all five mills in Finland, Kemi, Rauma, Kaskinen, Joutseno and Äänekoski as mentors,” says Seppäläinen. The Uruguayan engineers who are responsible for the mill operations, have all had a Finnish working pair, a mentor, who has been working with them in the construction and testing period of the mill. “These experts stayed on site during the start-up until they make themselves unnecessary when the Uruguayan staff has the required know-how and experience level to run the mill.” Seppäläinen says that according to students’ experiences AEL and Pohto courses were of high quality, having a good balance of theoretical and practical approaches. “Our own staff made remarkable work in guiding Uruguayan in a field that was totally new for them. And as many as 14 papertec 2008 eight process engineers from Uruguay got one-year training at the Helsinki University of Technology.” NUEVA PALMIRA PORT CAN STORE 100 000 TONS OF PULP In late August 2007 the Uruguayan president Tabaré Vazquez inaugurated the harbour of the company ONTUR in Nueva Palmira. The harbour company is owned by Botnia (40 %), Ontemar (18%), NYK Lauritzen Cool (14%), Christophersen S.A. (14%) and Swed Fund International (14%). The harbour was enlarged to facilitate the pulp deliveries and its warehouse is one of the largest in Uruguay. In addition to pulp deliveries, the harbour is an important export hub for fruit and other products. At the Fray Bentos mill itself, there is storage capacity only for approximately one day’s production – with full barge storage is up to four days. The main warehousing is done elsewhere. The pulp is delivered with barges 80 km downstream to Nueva Palmira. In this harbour there is 30,000 m 2 covered warehouse space, able to store 100,000 tons of pulp. In Nueva Palmira the pulp is then loaded into ocean carriers transporting it to customers in Europe and in China. All in all, there will be three barges carrying pulp from the mill to Nueva Palmira. Two barges are ready, and the third one is under construction. All barges were manufactured in the capital city of Montevideo. SMOOTH SUBCONTRACTING The biggest process equipment supplier of Botnia Uruguay was Andritz. The scope of delivery included a fiberline, woodyard, pulp dewatering/drying and baling as well as chemical recovery. The fiberline will have a 3200 tons per day digester and downflow of solids. The bleaching method is ECF (elemental chlorine free). Woodyard can handle 330m 3 of solids per hour, it has two debarking/chipping lines and two chip storage piles with stacker and reclaimers. Chemical recovery (low NOX recovery boiler with advanced gas burning system) has 7-effect evaporation plant, with 10 000 m 3 /day white liquor plant. Pulp dewatering/drying and baling has 3600 admt/day capacity. There are four baling lines. With the exception of the pulp dyers, all the main equipment were made in Finland Installation of process equipment was done in late 2006 and first part of 2007. Andritz announced that the value of the

Page 15

Uruguay order for its part was at around EUR 200 million, while the whole plant is estimated to cost about EUR 900 million. In addition to above mentioned order, Andritz has joint responsibility with Botnia for a large number of non-propriatory items on “Open Book” basis. Andritz’ part of the installation was ready by late summer 2007. Andritz naturally used subcontractors. One important subcontractor was Sahala works, who participated by contracting complete evaporator bodies. The company also delivered heat exchangers in many mill units. Kemira was another very large supplier. The company announced that the value of the order was about EUR 85 million. Kemira built a chemical factory which supplies the pulp mill. Its Uruguay project progressed well, and remained in budget goals. At its peak, almost 400 people worked on site. There were many other sub-projects from Finnish companies. Metso Automation and Botnia S.A.agreed on valve deliveries to the new pulp mill. The order comprised of automated control and onoff valves, manual valves as well as digital positioners. Vahterus Ltd, based in Uusikaupunki in South West Finland, delivered welded heat exchangers to the demanding applications of the pulp mill. Vahterus heat exchangers are much more compact than traditional ones, requiring only a fraction of space. Vahterus has grown into a world leader in the supply of heat transfer products with over 13,000 units in operation globally. Pulp and paper mills are one important customer group for Vahterus, as are energy and marine industries. Aseko was chosen to be the main valve supplier for Botnia S.A. project. The number of the valves is about 10 000 pieces and the delivery contains manual valves and motor operated low and high pressure valves from size DN10(3/8”) up to DN1300(52”). KYMPPI-ERISTYS OY INSULATED HALF OF THE BOTNIA S.A. MILL IN URUGUAY Kymppi-Eristys is a Finnish company, which supplies the process industry with industrial insulation. Its customers operate in a variety of industries. The most prominent customer industries include pulp and paper, metal, energy production and the chemical and petrochemical industries. Since the start of the new millennium Kymppi-Eristys has grown into a one-stop insulation company with more than 300 insulation professionals. The company’s headquarters are located in Oulu, Northern Finland, and it has three other sites in Finland. One of the largest projects of Kymppi-Eristys has been the insulation delivery to Botnia’s Fray Bentos pulp mill in 20062007. The delivery in Uruguay included insulation of the fibre line and drying machine, insulation of the turbine and tanks, and insulation of pipelines between these plants, totalling approximately 24 km in length and also scaffolding work in all areas. Kymppi-Eristys had an important role also in insulation work of Kemira’s “chemical island” of the pulp mill. The Uruguay project involved experts from Finland, Uruguay, Poland, Estonia, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia and the United States. The total workforce was about 150 persons, of which some 80 were doing final insulation works in the autumn 2007. ? KLAUS SUSILUOTO papertec 2008 15

During the implementation the Kronodoc solution and information management procedures were defined to match our needs. The approach allowed us to start controlling the project documentation very rapidly. “ I n big projects information management, distribution and follow-up in the supplier network are key success factors. Kronodoc has focused its products and services to serve that need. The role of the Kronodoc solution in big projects is threefold. It serves the entire supplier network as: – The official delivery interface for all documentation – The project document archive – The distribution platform to publish information and notify suppliers of change Largest industrial projects have earned Kronodoc the reputation of being the platform of choice for very complex and document intensive projects. As a 100% web based application it is rapidly deployed into large networks over the Internet. Studies demonstrate that efficient information management procedures can decrease the amount of document work by as much as 50%. Considering that document work can be represent up to 30% of engineering hours this translates into savings of tens of thousands of working hours. The biggest benefits nevertheless are indirect. The amount of manufacturing and purchasing errors due to wrong or outdated specifications has been shown to drastically decrease when all suppliers are required to fetch source documentation from one central source prior to starting their work.??

Photo: Lehtikuva Oy/Valtioneuvoston kanslia Bigger leaps through bigger risks FOREST INDUSTRY MUST EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITEIES WITHIN THE SERVICE BUSINESS, SAYS CHRISTINE HAGSTRÖM-NÄSI OF METSÄKLUSTERI OY Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, Chairman of Science and Technology Policy Council. The company is tasked with the initiation of research programmes and the channelling of research funding to the strategic centre for science, technology and innovation for the forest cluster. The aim is to shape the centre into the world’s strongest innovation environment for the forest cluster. Christine Hagström-Näsi started as the Managing Director of Metsäklusteri Oy in September. She is fully confident that the Finnish forest cluster has what it takes to become a forerunner for the sector. “Cooperation between companies and research units in the industry as well as with public research funders will create an entirely new concept for spurring innovation. This is a significant new opening for 18 papertec 2008 both the forest cluster and Finland,” she says. Hagström-Näsi has a long association with research and research funding in the forest and chemicals industries and has been involved with the establishment of the new forest cluster strategic centre from the very beginning. FOREST CLUSTER INSIDER Looking at the challenges ahead, HagströmNäsi’s experience in both arranging funding for research activities as well as in the organisation of research programmes should come handy in steering the new entity along. Hagström-Näsi previously served as Director of the Forest and Chemical Industries branch of Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. The Finnish forest cluster is preparing for a storm. Sensing severe changes in the weather, the forest cluster’s leading companies joined forces with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) and four different universities in March 2007. The result: a brand new innovation company by the name of Metsäklusteri Oy. Metsäklusteri Oy is the first manifestation of a new national innovation agenda. Under Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen’s chairmanship, the Science and Technology Policy Council of Finland decided last year that five strategic centres for science, technology and innovation will be established in the initial phase. As it turned out, the forest cluster centre was the first one to commence operations. Metsäklusteri Oy is not supposed to be a giant organisation bogged down by bureaucracy, but instead, a fast-moving change agent. To date, the company has only two employees: Managing Director Hagström-Näsi and Research Director Lars Gädda. “We are aiming to be a catalyst, and

Page 19

can not be very big in size,” HagströmNäsi says. TRAILBLAZER When asked for a reason, why the forest camp was the first one out of the gate, Hagström-Näsi replies that the industry has been worried about the future for some time and there is plenty of common ground to start from. “The industry has been looking into these issues since 2004, even before the Government commissioned its own globalisation reports in 2005,” HagströmNäsi explains. Since the industry players and the Government were both moving towards the same conclusions - albeit on different set of tracks - it was easy enough to get going, when the time was right. As the Science and Technology Policy Council announced the launch of the strategic centres in June 2006, the forest industry players sat down to draw a letter of intent before the year was over. The new company started operations in March 2007, and Managing Director joined the company six months later. So far, other sectors have not been able to follow forest cluster’s lead, but Hagström-Näsi is hopeful that there will be some progress next year: “Many clusters have come a long way with regards to content, and in 2008 there will be other organisations starting,” she believes. CORPORATE AND SCIENTIFIC EXCELLENCE Traditionally, forest industry has formed the backbone of Finnish economy. While other strong sectors have emerged, the forest sector is still a vital part of national competitiveness. Nurturing the world’s finest innovation environment seems like a tall order for such a small country, but Hagström-Näsi believes that the key lies in the close cooperation of the various stakeholders. “According to studies, the collaboration between corporations and scientific communities works better in Finland than just about anywhere else. This gives us a great platform to build something,” she says. It is also rare that big companies, who are in open competition with each other, are able to come together to explore strategies for survival of the entire sector. The Finnish forest cluster players now find themselves in a situation where the entire cost structure is dramatically heavier than before. Hagström-Näsi points out, that operating in the world of high-cost energy and raw mmaterials is a challenge for all industries, not only the forest sector. “Mitigation of climate change can also bring about new opportunities for the forest cluster,” she says, mentioning forest management and diligent use of raw material as examples of sustainable development. ? Do you always know where your goods are? Have they been lost, or even shipped? Unfortunately, these questions come up far too often in many industrial capital projects. LogiNets Oy has developed a costeffective electronic tool to manage product deliveries, developed in cooperation with leading Finnish companies. L ogiNets Oy’s Internet-based goods delivery management system, RPM Manager TM , is easy to use and meets the requirements of demanding international capital projects. This system covers the entire supply chain, from the initial delivery request to the final installation of goods at the project site. 26 papertec 2008 Managing the flow of goods in capital projects “Our customers call it an ‘electronic goods delivery system.’ This highly automated system generates alarms, signalling for example deviations from scheduled delivery times. Our clients can manage goods flows at the network level, and easily track individual items. All documents and logistic information are in one place, so information moves freely between all parties. Processes are thus streamlined, goods are delivered on time, the quality of shipments is increased and our clients save time and money,” says Petri Kiianlinna, managing director of LogiNets Oy. RPM Manager TM solutions are designed to manage deliveries in pulp & paper, construction, oil & gas, power and off-shore industries, and are especially useful for companies with international operations who have a high rate of outsourcing and need custom-tailored products. The first RPM Manager TM software version was introduced to the Finnish market in 2004. Today RPM solutions have been used in more than 30 international capital projects (e.g. ABB, Foster Wheeler Energy and Metso). SAVE TIME AND HASSLE “Our project deliveries from Europe and the US via Finland to Russia require realtime information on the location of each delivery. Long delays and poor quality required us to try new tools. Using the RPM system has made it possible for us to step in and intervene before it’s too late. Sharing the same information with all the other parties along the supply network has cut down on the number of mistakes. Furthermore, the online information has dramatically reduced the number of unnecessary telephone calls and emails.” – Jussi Södergård, Project Manager, Wellquip Oy. ?

30 papertec 2008 RF Valve F Valve is a full port pinch valve with new advanced Rfeatures, which are patented. Elastomer tube design is unique with two transversal folds that flex - not stretch when the valve is closed. This increases the tube life specially when the valve is opened/ closed frequently. Another feature is a standard and in most cases shorter face-to-face length than conventional pinch valves. Transversal folds stiffen the tube that it will not collapse under vacuum conditions as other pinch valve sleeves. Therefore it serves well e.g. as a pump suction inlet valve. Valve construction allows an easy in-line tube change that reduces maintenance and operating costs [time and calibration free]. No need to disconnect air piping or electric wiring. Time and costs for the change are essentially lower. In pulp and paper application the valves are used particularly with coaters, fillers, junk traps, mixers, lime mud, green liquer and lime milk. ? More information: www.rfvalve.com ECOPUMP VACUUM AND DEWATERING CONTROL – SAVING ENERGY AND WATER WHILE IMPROVING RUNNABILITY W hen dewatering flows are stabilised to optimal level, the machine runs better. Here, Ecoflow measurement system is a good tool. With these online measurements, paper machine personnel can select the best performing felts, optimise felt life, adjust the vacuums in each vacuum position to reach the highest dewatering capacity. At the same time, significant savings in pumping cost can be gained. Vacuum system power consumption can be reduced by 30..70% by utilising Ecopump controllable vacuum system. No seal water is needed, either, which can bring good savings, too. There are two steps in reducing consumption: first, optimising the capacity to level that matches the need. Secondly, using economical pumping technology together with dewatering measurements, the cost can be further reduced. Ecopump process engineering group has pragmatic experience from hundreds of paper machines. By working together with the machine personnel we make sure there will be long lasting results. ? Betamet with its subsidiary companies installed a complete paper manufacture line in the new Plattling Papier factory of Myllykoski in Germany. No problems were met with the installation work despite a tight schedule. 32 papertec 2008 A significant installation work successfully completed Up to 120 persons worked under Betamet’s supervision at the installation site of Plattling Papier paper machine line. The work was completed on schedule. T he installation work was ordered from Betamet by Metso Paper, which delivered the major part of the equipment of the Plattling Papier paper machine line. A close cooperation and good flow of information between the company account and the other interest groups ensured an efficient implementation of the project. The Plattling Papier factory was built in Low Bavaria, next to the MD Plattling factory of Myllykoski. LOGISTICS AS A CHALLENGE According to Esa Kärki, the project manager, the greatest challenge was to control material flows, because a lot of goods were coming in. – All of the 1100 truckloads were ordered to the installation site according to the JOT principle. The installation work contained the pressure grinding plant, stock preparation system, 11.3-metre wide paper machine, on-machine calender, winders, roll handling systems and machine ventilation. EXPERTS STAY ON SCHEDULE The project began at the beginning of May in 2007, and was completed on schedule in early October. Betamet used also subcontractors in subordination of its own work supervision. Up to 120 workers participated in the installation work simultaneously. – Cooperation with the subcontractors went fine even though sometimes not common language was found, Mr. Kärki states. Betamet had many Central European subcontractors, which were tried and tested during previous projects. Networking gives a possibility to benefit from them in future projects, too. AS A FINN IN THE OUTSIDE WORLD Betamet has a lot of experience in large pioneer projects, demanding modernizations and mechanical maintenance all around the world. They have had commissions in 20 countries on 4 continents. Installation and maintenance works are related to mechanical equipment, automation, air devices as well as industrial pipeworks and pressure vessels. In 2006, the turnover of Betamet was approximately 20.5 million euros. The group employs almost 200 persons. ?

FOREST INDUSTRY FUTURE: Finding the hit products of tomorrow The Finnish forest industry is facing great challenges. Although Finland is known as a forest industry superpower, proud history does count for much in today’s business environment. Teija Meuronen, Director of Forest Industry Future cluster programme, says that the industry’s future success will depend on whether it will find the new ways of operating and the brave visionaries that it needs. 34 papertec 2008 “T here is a need for action, even radical action, in the industry. Above all, collaboration is required every step of the way,” Meuronen says. She points out that various competencies need to come together in order to secure a brighter future – focus on technology and innovation alone will not win the day, if, at the same time, the business operations are not on the top-pro level as well. Forest Industry Future cluster programme is part of the national Centres of Expertise programme. The cluster programme focuses on areas of expertise which have the potential to generate significant new business opportunities. The cluster programme seeks to bring growth into the forest industry and to aid in its revival by boosting business potential in the areas where sectors and technologies overlap. GETTING STARTED Lappeenranta Innovation Ltd, which is the administrator for KOSKE (Centre of Expertise for Southeast Finland), is also in charge of coordinating the national operations of Forest Industry Future cluster. The cluster was launched early this year, but it really got going in earnest in early summer, reports Meuronen. The kick-off seminar for Forest Industry Future cluster programme was held

Page 35

in Lappeenranta in October. The event pooled together 130 high-ranking professionals of the industry. At the seminar, Meuronen presented the cluster’s Vision 2013 as well as the operative model. In 2013, Finland should boast a successful and competitive forest cluster which operates under the principles of sustainable development. The cluster utilises the best available expertise and is known for commercialising innovation into hit products – and especially the small and medium companies do extremely well in this department. ”Hit products could emerge from packaging, printed intelligence or tailored fibre acquisition,” Meuronen lists. For instance in packaging, new innovations such as environmentally friendly medicine or CD packages have already hit the market. In addition, enabling technologies will help make pulp and paper processes more efficient, while measurement technology will bring benefits across the board, Meuronen believes. ? SAMI J. Pesmel advanced roll handling and packing line for IP T he new roll handling and packing line is one key element of the production process, as it is capable to handle, sort and pack rolls with high capacity enabling the production to run continuously without stoppages. “In modern mills, the production capacity has reached such heights that it is impossible to continue working in the finishing areas without automated systems. Currently the general scenario is that there is a new set of rolls entering from the winder into the handling and packaging line in every two and half minutes,” states Mr. Panu Perasto, Area Sales Manager from Pesmel. Thus, the quality control, sorting, packaging and labelling has to be completed in a certain time, which sets requirements also to the automated system, not to mention to manual working phases. From a mechanical perspective, the Pesmel line looks like a typical handling line with stretch film packing equipments, but in fact it contains applications of the very latest industrial automation available to the market. For example, the sorting and packaging functions are fully automated. The handling and packing line is integrated into IP’s IT system. This means that the operator’s main task is to monitor the system as the handling and packing line effectively acts as a decision maker. After the winder has made the slits, Pesmel’s system communicates with the mill computer and reads what kind of packages are ordered as well as their quantity (the packet may include 1 to 4 rolls). From there, the handling and packaging line will generate the relevant processes accordingly. Pesmel has considerable experience in paper roll handling and packing. According to our our philosophy we focus on permanent product development and generate unique innovations, which has resulted that the most modern handling and packing lines are made by Pesmel. ? 38 papertec 2008 International Paper (IP) is one of the leading paper manufacturing companies in the world. Pesmel has supplied a new roll handling and packing line to IP´s Riegelwood, NC mill in the United States. ComboSprint method: effective water jets surrounded by air curtains clean the fabric structure profoundly. 40 papertec 2008 Effective cleaning of dryer fabric Fastpap ComboSprint is an online cleaning solution for dryer fabric with a unique cleaning method: high pressure water and air jets go straight through the fabric, removing all the impurities from the fabric and placing them in a save-all underneath. PM4’s experiences using Fastpap ComboSprint at UPM-Kymmene’s Kajaani mill have been outstanding.

Page 41

DEVELOPED ACCORDING TO CUSTOMER NEEDS The very first ComboSprint was delivered to UPM-Kymmene’s PM4 in Kajaani in February 2006. Another ComboSprint was installed in the same paper machine soon afterwards, in December 2006. Lasse Kauppinen, Superintendent at PM4, says that the need for online cleaning arose when their old offline cleaner could no longer clean the dryer fabric satisfactorily, and they had to clean it manually. They also had to change the fabric a few times because dirt had accumulated. Some competing cleaning solutions were considered, but Fastpap ComboSprint had the most potential. – Fabric cleaner is very basic equipment, but Fastpap ComboSprint has some great features that promote its availability and productivity, says Kauppinen. AIMING FOR BETTER RUNNABILITY AND PRODUCTIVITY The innovative solutions for cleaning technology developed by Fastpap were tailored together with UPM-Kymmene to fit their needs. ComboSprint was further developed with high reliability as a guideline, and, as a result, almost all of its maintenance can be carried out during production. When the first cleaner was brought into use, its influence was hard to determine because other improvements were also made at the same time, whereas installing the second ComboSprint clearly improved process productivity. Kauppinen is pleased with the cleaners and Fastpap’s co-operation with the paper mill. According to him, the projects went smoothly, and fabric cleanliness is now constantly better than before. – In my opinion Fastpap ComboSprint is an excellent and dependable fabric cleaner. It has fulfilled all our requirements. EXCLUSIVE PRODUCTS WITH EXCLUSIVE PARTNERS Fastpap’s product range also includes cleaners for forming fabrics, felts and roll surfaces, and tail cutters for both wet and dry end. In addition, Fastpap has developed some of the industry’s standard brands for leading suppliers in the papermaking industry, including Metso PaperIQ scanners, for instance. In all, Fastpap has delivered over 1,000 products worldwide. Fastpap Oy Ab was founded in 2006, when its owner Helvar Merca Oy merged Enfoplan Oy, Retool Oy and Fastems Paper Industry Products division. ? www.fastpap.com papertec 2008 41
